After serving three years in the Naval Submarine Service Boyd Bartlett enrolled at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, Colorado and graduated in 1978 with a Fine Arts degree in Sculpture. It was his art history course work that helped him to look at American Painters and realize that this is what he wanted to do. Boyd never left Fort Collins and thinks it's a good central location for him. He frequently makes trips back east to Maine where his family roots are.

From the beginning, he always admired the works of Winslow Homer, Chet Reneson and Eldridge Hardie and from that, Boyd has evolved into a painter who paints an abstract form of realism. "I paint what I feel is the essence of the scene, leaving a lot for the viewer to fill in with their imagination and experiences."

His out door activities have influenced his work in every aspect. His colors are bold and bright and give strength to the overall effect of his paintings.

About his art, Boyd says, "It's the feeling you get from doing the painting that is the real reward. If someone else likes it, that's great and if they want to purchase a painting, that's even better. It shows they like it enough to buy it. As with anything, years of practice and a creative mind, are key to just about anything you choose to do, including art."
